The SawStop might be the world’s safest table saw, with its revolutionary contact detection and brake system feature the spinning saw blade will immediately stops and retracts if there is a contact with anything that even remotely resembles your finger, pretty cool, isn’t it?
How does the SawStop safety system actually works? An electronic detection system that comes in the sawstop will detects when a person contacts the blade. The system then, transmit an electrical signal onto the saw blade and monitors that signal for changes. When a person contacts the blade, a relatively large inherent electrical capacitance and conductivity in the human body will cause the signal to drop, while the wood which has a relatively small inherent capacitance and conductivity doesn’t cause the signal to drop. So if a contact is detected by the system, then a fast-acting brake will stops the blade immediately.
Watch the video bellow, where it practically self-destructs in order to save the life of the innocent hot dog
and what happen if that were actually your finger?
